A lot rides on those first few words. They grab attention and draw our readers in. But first sentences also set tone, establish voice, provide momentum and direction, and so much more.
In this workshop, we’ll go back-and-forth between exploring a range of writers’ approaches to the first sentence in fiction and nonfiction, and completing a handful of interactive—and entertaining—in-class writing exercises. Participants will leave with useful tools to see those first few words anew. All genres and experience levels welcome.
