Rachel Layne: How to Read The News

February 5, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The news is overwhelming. How do you sort through it? Where to begin? How do you know what’s true? Come listen to a journalist outline how she ferrets out information using tools of the trade.

You’ll learn how to:
– Identify a meme or unreported story vs. news written by professional journalists
– Figure out where stories posted on social media come from
– Spot fake or doctored photos
– Ask common-sense questions that quickly ferret out “fake news”
– Identify the difference between news, analysis and opinion sections of a mainstream news outlet
– Find resources to help navigate through impeachment, the election and international conflicts

Rachel Layne is a Boston-based freelance journalist published in outlets including CBS, USA Today, CQ Researcher, Karma Impact, HBS Working Knowledge and MIT Technology Review. She previously spent 20 years at Bloomberg News, where she covered global multi-industrial companies including GE, United Technologies and Tyco, among other roles. She is the co-captain of the Greater Boston chapter for the Journalism & Women’s Symposium (JAWS) and a member of IRE, SABEW and SEJ.
