SUMMARY:Craig Stormont
DESCRIPTION:Craig Stormont is a writer and teacher from Queens\, NY\, currently living and working on Long Island. He spent the 1980’s hitchhiking around the United States. Later\, he enrolled in college\, where he was introduced to the work of Charles Olson\, whose ideas resonated with him. His field research concerning Olson led him to visit Vincent Ferrini at 126 E. Main St.\, in July of 2001\, resulting in an interview that was later published as The Initiations. \n\n Vincent: Living and Writing will focus on their conversations and what Craig learned from Vincent in reference to writing\, values\, and the importance of enjoying a simple life\, which seems to be becoming more and more of a foreign notion to most in this materialistic age.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Susan Erony Talk
DESCRIPTION:Gloucester-based artist\, lecturer\, and sometime curator Susan Erony attended Rhode Island School of Design\, Massachusetts College of Art\, Lesley University and the University for Humanistic Studies in Utrecht\, Holland. Her artwork has focused primarily on history and the human condition and her lectures on the intersection of art and society. Erony has consulted to organizations on the issues of art and society\, taught and lectured on both art history and art practice\, and organized exhibitions on subjects ranging from the use of artistic devices in creating prejudice to those showcasing the work of one artist. Erony has exhibited extensively and has work in private and public collections in North America\, Europe and the Middle East. \nText\, Image & Visual Art:\nA Brief Introduction\nMany people are familiar with the magnificent Medieval European illuminated manuscripts of Christian tradition. Most think of these beautiful objects as decorated texts\, but in other traditions comparable combinations are considered paintings. Throughout art history\, words appear in works of visual art. With the turning of the twentieth century in the West\, artists began to explore the relationship in new ways\, and artistic doors have been opening since. From the Futurists through the Dadaists and Surrealists to Conceptual artists and Graffiti artists of the last third of the 20th century\, and up until today\, words keep entering visual art. \nGloucester artist Susan Erony will present an illustrated talk on word and art in the 20th century with the goal of providing some understanding of the fascinating history and the challenges to the visual artist working with text. \nThis project was made possible by the Society for the Encouragement for the Arts Partner With an Artist Program with support from the Bruce J. Anderson and the Selma and Andrew Bayness Funds of the Boston Foundation. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Gay Walley: Reading
DESCRIPTION:The April 20 reading will be a reading of a play that is currently going up in Prague and hopefully Off Broadway in New York\, MAHLER AND FREUD IN HOLLAND. Audience participation to read might be required\, along with Thorpe Feidt and Peter Anastas who have kindly agreed to read Mahler and Freud. Charlee Bianchini will read Alma and there are some other surprise characters… The play centers around the meeting of Freud and Mahler – but it also is about what it is to be a genius\, what it is to be a genius married\, what was the future of music then\, and the future of art now.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Reading: 4 Local Poets
DESCRIPTION:Nathan Cohen is a violinist\, trumpeter\, and director of the Rockport Public Schools orchestra and chamber music program. He performs regularly with the band What Time Is It\, Mr. Fox?\, of which he is a founding member\, and freelances with other folk\, pop\, and classical ensembles around Boston and New York City. He loves the deliciousness of words\, but is reluctant to call himself a poet. He believes that poetry’s role is inseparable from the role of music. As he says\, “there is poetry under the surface of any good melody\, and melody under the surface of any good poem.” He is honored to share some of his work at The Writers Center.\n\nRuthanne (Rufus) Collinson has worked as a journalist\, editor\, bookkeeper and turkey farmer. She has lived in Gloucester since birth and Gloucester is the source and spirit of her poetry. As Gloucester’s poet laureate\, she is working with the schools to provide writing programs for Gloucester’s youth. Her poems have been published in various journals and in two collections by Folly Cove Books.\n\nRuth Maassen grew up in western Michigan and arrived on Cape Ann in 1980. In the years since\, she has had the pleasure of working with many local writers on her poetry and fiction. Her poems have been published in Inkwell\, Tar River Poetry\, and other journals\, and her Picking Raspberries was one of the Folly Cove chapbook series. As the poet laureate of Rockport\, she is honored to be asked to read a poem at Town Meeting every April.\n\nSage Walcott\, a former lawyer\, and his wife Linda live in Gloucester near Ravenswood Park and Freshwater Cove where he and his dog often find inspiration for his poetry. Since leaving the legal profession\, he has been teaching literature and creative writing at North Shore Community College.  He also serves on the Board of the Cape Ann Forum which\, since 9/11\, has been bringing distinguished lecturers to Gloucester.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest
