SUMMARY:Barbara F. Hyams: Reading Rilke with Denise Levertov
DESCRIPTION:Winter Quarter 1982\, Stanford University: Denise Levertov (1923-1997)\, a world-famous visiting professor of English\, and Barbara Hyams (1951-)\, a newly minted Ph.D. in German Studies\, meet for coffee. They bond over reading Rainer Maria Rilke’s (1875-1926) poetry in the original German and become close friends for the remainder of Levertov’s life. To Levertov Rilke is a literary mentor and a spiritual inspiration; to Hyams he is one of many German-speaking modernists grappling with Nietzsche’s proclamation that “God is dead.” \nHyams’ essay\, “Reading Rilke with Denise Levertov\,” part personal reminiscence and part comparative literary history of Rilke reception in Germany and the U.S.\, was published 2014 in the New England Review (Vol. 34\, No. 3-4). \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Holiday Construction
DESCRIPTION:We received a grant from the Community Preservation Act to fix our roof\, put in some windows\, fix the chimney and do some other necessities!  This is the way we looked 5 years ago.  We took down the wall to make one intimate space. Thank you to Greg Morell who spearheaded the renovation with co-director Henry Ferrini to create what we have today. Next time you come buy we will have a transom window above the yellow ladder.  The GWC will be  closed until January 14th when Barbara Hyams will kick off the  2015 calendar year with discussion about teaching Denise Levertov German via the poetry of Rilke.\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest
