SUMMARY:Veterans Writing Workshop\, Fall 2015
DESCRIPTION:“Why Write? To Better Understand the World\nand the People Who Live in It” – Brian Turner\, Iraq Veteran and Poet\nVeterans Writing Workshop\, Fall 2015\, Starts Oct. 1. \nThe Inner Voice and the Outer World\nThe Veterans Writing Workshop helps people get started or move forward on their own writing projects. Veterans from all wars and disaster relief\, and family members are invited to participate. The workshop takes place at the Veterans Center\, 12 Emerson Avenue in Gloucester\, on Thursdays from 10 – 12 p.m. beginning October 1 and ending November 12. Class size is limited to 12 writers. \nFrom Week to Week \nWriting is the goal. This workshop fosters a regular writing practice in a comfortable atmosphere with a spirit of openness and receptivity. The creative process is different for everyone and like a river\, it changes. You will have the opportunity to share your work and enjoy the writing of others. Writers will receive individual attention through weekly written comments and personal conferences. Brief excerpts from relevant readings in prose and poetry will be shared. \nThe workshop should strengthen your confidence as a writer\, and as a critical thinker and editor of your own work. Past participants in the workshop have recognized progress in their writing and take pride in seeing the work of the mind unfold on the page. \nDorothy Shubow Nelson\, M.A. English\, workshop facilitator and teacher\, offers guidance and direction. Formerly Senior Lecturer in English at UMass Boston\, she has taught writing and literature for over 25 years. Her poems\, reviews and other writings have appeared in various publications. Her book of poems\, The Dream of the Sea\, was published in 2008. She participates annually with the Joiner Institute for the Study of War and Social Consequences and serves as an Advisor to the Gloucester Writers Center. \n“Somewhere along here I first became conscious of the feeling…\nthat comes when you first notice your life turning into a story.”\n– from A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean. \nRegister with Lucia Amero at the Gloucester Office of Veterans Services 12 Emerson Avenue. Call 978-281-9740. This workshop is supported by the Gloucester Office of Veterans Services and the Gloucester Writers Center. There is no charge for this workshop.\nFor more information contact: Dorothy.Nelson@umb.edu \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:A Celebration of Ken Irby
DESCRIPTION:So that ecstasy is not a movement to leave the body\, but a movement of the whole body to join that which surrounds it – the literal mulch and stalk\, sap and resonance everywhere around. That is the people there\, as well – as surely growing there as the phloem and xylem of the vegetation in the yard. And all the movement of me\, that moves as it can toward that ecstasy – Love’s reality is to love\, not to understand or change\, only to love –\n\n– Kenneth Irby\nfrom Preface\, Movements/Sequences (1965)\n\n\nJoin us as we celebrate the life and work of our friend Ken Irby.\nWith readings by Gerrit Lansing\, Kyle Waugh\,  Ammiel Alcalay\,\nJeff Bergfalk\, Patrick Doud\, Jim Dunn and more.\nWe invite you to participate by reading a piece for Ken.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Poem du Jour w/ Richard Wyndham
DESCRIPTION:Richard Wyndham has been posting a poem a day on his Poem Du Jour list serve for the last few years. We are preparing for this wonderful evening of poetry read by Richard’s  subscribers.  Stop by\, you’re assured to hear at least one month’s worth of poetry! \n  \nHe posted this poem today on August 21th\, 2015 by Mary Oliver \nMussels \nIn the riprap\nin the cool caves\,\nin the dim and salt-refreshed\nrecesses\, they cling\nin dark clusters \,\nin barnacled fistfuls\,\nin the dampness that never\nleaves\, in the deeps\nof high tide\, in the slow\nwashing away of the water\nin which they feed\,\nin which the blue shells\nopen a little\, and the orange bodies\nmake a sound\,\nnot loud.\nnot unmusical\, as they take\nnourishment\, as the ocean\nenters their bodies. At low tide\nI am on the riprap\, clattering\nwith boots and a pail\,\nrock over rock; I choose\nthe crevice\, I reach\nforward into the dampness\,\nmy hands feeling everywhere\nfor the best\, the biggest. Even before\nI decide which to take\,\nwhich to twist from the wet rocks\,\nwhich to devour\,\nthey\, who have no eyes to see with\,\nsee me\, like a shadow\,\nbending forward. Together\nthey make a sound\,\nnot loud\,\nnot unmusical\, as they lean\ninto the rock\, away\nfrom my grasping fingers. \n  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest
