SUMMARY:Stay Safe
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends\,\n\nDuring this time of mass isolation we are  hunkering down with our Board to explore\, regroup and reimagine how we can best serve the community while moving sustainably into our this unpredictable future.  To do this we are temporarily suspending our live programming and events until the invisible storm passes.\n\n \nWe want to stay connected with all who love this place by posting from our Archive the events we have brought to you over the last decade.  These posts are one with our Mission to honor and celebrate Cape Ann’s rich literary legacy and to encourage writing and citizenship in the belief that all our voices count. \n \nWe will post  from past events and keep you informed of upcoming virtual events either live-streamed on Facebook\, posted on instagram or our website.  We don’t know when live programming will return but we hope sooner rather than later and you will all be the first to know.  In the meantime visit us here.\n\nwww.gloucesterwriters.org    www.facebook.com/gloucesterwriters  www.maudolsonlibrary.org\n\nThank you for all your support over these last ten years.\n\nBe safe\,\n\nHenry Ferrini\, Co-Founder and Director\nGloucester Writers Center\n \n \n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Who's A Class Traitor Now? On Being A Working-Class Writer or a Miscreant Artist in New England
DESCRIPTION:Let’s have a conversation together about the specifics of being a class traitor in New England. We can define it together. Public figures like Eileen Myles (Arlington\, Massachusetts)\, Carl Andre (Quincy\, MA)\, and  Marsden Hartley (born in Maine; painted in Gloucester) will serve as touchstones. Together\, we will break down how often (but not always!) the writer\, the muse\, the artist and the artist’s model\, as categories\, engage in both class erasure and class fetishization. Half-lumpen\, semi-miscreant…how does the working class avant-garde\, be they writer or artist- traverse the classed rift between her origins and her work? \n  \nMary Walling Blackburn (born 1972) is a writer and artist\, currently living in New England.  Walling Blackburn’s work engages a wide spectrum of materials that probe and intensify the historic\, ecological\, and class-born brutalities of North American life. Forthcoming publications include “From the Gnome’s Genome to Trash DNA: Technologies of Ancestor Phantasy for a Final Generation” (e-flux journal). Other recent works include Quaestiones Perversas (Pioneer Works\, Brooklyn\, 2017)\, co-written with Beatriz E. Balanta; “Gina and the Stars” published by Tamawuj\, an off-site publishing platform for the Sharjah Bienniel 13 and “Slowness\,” a performance text in the sound-based web publication Ear│Wave│Event. Walling Blackburn’s writing has been featured in publications including Afterall\, BOMB\, Cabinet\, e-flux journal\, Grafter’s Quarterly\, Grey Room\, Pastelegram\, and Women and Performance.\n  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:He Dreams of Giants
DESCRIPTION:The GWC is a community Partner with Salem Film Festival again this year.\n\nThe Guardian says\,  “…a moody plunge into the anguish of the artistic process…By the end of this movie you’ll realize \n\nthat Gilliam’s struggles are humanity’s struggles.” \n\n\n\nIn 2000\, when he Terry Gilliam first attempted a screen adaptation of Cervantes’ masterpiece\, Don Quixote de la Mancha\, the film director already had a Quixotic reputation: a filmmaker whose stories of visionary dreamers raging against gigantic forces mirrored his own battles with the Hollywood machine. HE DREAMS OF GIANTS picks up Gilliam’s story 17 years later as he mounts the production again. He struggles with budget constraints and heightened expectations compounded by doubt\, the toll of aging\, and the nagging existential question: What is left for an artist when he completes this career defining quest? Immersive verité footage of Gilliam’s production combined with interviews and archival footage reveals a character study of this late-career artist\, and a meditation on the value of creativity in the face of mortality.\n\n \nTrailer:   https://youtu.be/i-M0ZxycME8\n\nGet Tickets Here!\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Peter Almond
DESCRIPTION:This event will be closed to the public.\nPlease join us for the live stream on Facebook!\n\n\nPeter Almond is a documentary and narrative filmmaker\, whose career includes work on public issues as a journalist and in public policy with both US and international projects. Current work include a drama set in the lead up to Civil War when Frederick Douglass abandons hope of a moral/political solution to ending slavery\, and concludes that war is the only way to resolve the crisis and end the nation’s embrace of inequality. These themes figure through Almond’s background in community organizing and policy around community control\, initiatives framed by power to communities suffering injustice. Ukraine\, Hungary\, and US struggle for democracy shape efforts to bring voices from these communities to full participation in public debate.  \n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:The Embodied Voice with Nadine Boughton
DESCRIPTION:The Embodied Voice \n  \nThe embodied voice is one rooted not only in larynx and throat but the Earth; it retains the animal\, the sounds of the world rising up through the body. As Charles Olson wrote: \nwhatever you have to say\, leave\nthe roots on\, let them\ndangle \nAnd the dirt \nJust to make clear\nwhere they come from \n  \nThese three sessions are an opportunity to drop down out of our heads\, fall in love with words and sound\, speak from our roots. Strength and tenderness in our spoken voice brings alive the written word. There will be plenty of time for writing. \n  \n$150. Fridays\, 10-12pm – January 17\, 24 and 31. Open to all – poets\, writers and beginners. Limited to eight\, minimum six. \n  \nThis class is full.  Registration is closed. \n  \n\n____________________________ \n  \nNadine Boughton\, M.A.\, is a writer/poet\, collage artist\, creativity coach in private practice\, and teacher. Her poetry and essays have been published in literary journals\, trade books and presented in a number of venues. Her roots are in the oral tradition; she studied writing and voice with David Whyte and others. Nadine’s visual art is represented by the Matthew Swift Gallery in Gloucester and is exhibited and collected internationally. She holds an M.A. in Expressive Therapy from Lesley University\, Cambridge\, MA. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest
