SUMMARY:Elements of Story: Works in Progress
DESCRIPTION:Elements of Story: Works in Progress \nAnn McArdle \nThurs mornings 9:30-12:30\, March 6-April 10\, 2014 \n$150; maximum class size 10 (this class is nearly full\, so register now.) \n  \nAre you working on a memoir\, a novel\, something half-way between the two? Join this workshop-style class where participants read and critique each other’s work and in the process make discoveries for their own writing. Discussion and in-class writing exercises focus on different elements that make a strong story: character development\, sense of place\, plot and overall structure\, language and word choice\, and whatever else comes up in your work. \n  \nWe’ll look at fiction and non-fiction examples in short form and long. \n  \n  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:We started the Open Mic in 2013 to fill a need.  The Gloucester Writers Center  had built a large community of interesting and interested people.     We had a schedule full of remarkable readers.  What was missing was the chance to hear the people of our own community and to welcome new voices to join us.  We wanted to give our audiences a chance to share their own work. \nOver the past year the Open Mic has become a place for a wide variety of voices to be heard.  In one night you may hear a story about growing up in Gloucester\, a child’s poem about the environment\, a piece of a memoir\, and a poem about a notorious Lanesville drunk.  We have heard a breadth  of work unmatched in most forums. \nThere is a generosity in listening\, in respecting each others’ voices at the Open Mic.   Over the past year we have built a community which looks forward to hearing the progress of longer works\, listens intently to the poems and stories of newcomers and old friends alike.   It is on this readiness to welcome different voices that the community has continued to grow. \nThe Open Mic has the democracy of public transportation.   Any given month one may find a teacher\, a grandmother\, a child\, a musician\, and our poet laureate all in the same room\, sharing with each other\, listening to each other.    We have built our ranks by welcoming all ages\, all classes\, all stories.  We welcome you to come add your  voice. \n  \nSign up at the door.  Each reader gets 5 minutes. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Writing a 10-Minute Play Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has a story to tell. The 10-minute play format has all the elements of drama – plot\, characters\, dialogue & conflict. Learn how to put those elements into a short piece written specifically for the stage\, for actors\, and for an audience. Over the 4-week class\, participants will create a 10-minute play for a Festival to be performed live. If you are a writer\, stretch your skills into theatre and the art of writing art dialogue. Lynda Robinson has been in the theatre for 30+ years as an actor\, director\, producer\, teacher and playwright. SUMMARY:Crazy Moon
DESCRIPTION:Donation: $10 – kids $5 (No one excluded for lack of funds) \nCRAZY MOON was originally inspired by a Writer’s Center playwriting class and when Joe Ann Hart took the plunge and produced a masterful play Keno at the RNCC (among other excellent works) that later was selected in a Boston Playwright’s Theater festival. Directing her play for that festival sparked the origins of this original play by her husband. CRAZY MOON is an original 10 song musical\, starring Gordon Baird but also featuring Kathleen Brown and the piano stylings of John Hyde and David Koen guitar.
