SUMMARY:Fishtown Players Benefit for the GWC
DESCRIPTION:Opening Night October 30th. \n All are welcome. \n“A masterpiece of carefully observed naturalistic writing\, of unforced political irony and cleverly concealed emotion…. Characters are brilliantly drawn.” \n– London Daily Mail \nLauded as one of the year’s best in London\, this remarkable first play is a gripping study of shifting alliances fueled by cut throat economics in the building trades. Three house painters working for a shifty contractor live in states of financial desperation: Lars is a family man with a crippling mortgage; Hemo has five kids and a drinking problem\, and Jack has just taken out a loan. When Lars\, not Jack\, is asked to be the foreman on the upcoming factory job\, a strike and a bloody battle for survival are triggered. \n“Do not\, repeat\, do not miss.” – London Sunday Times \n \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Diggers Series: Grace Schrafft Gloucester Witches
DESCRIPTION:In September of 1692 nine Gloucester women were accused of witchcraft.  Esther Elwell\, Margaret Prince\, Elizabeth Dicer\, Joan Penney\, Phoebe Day\, Mary Rowe\, Rachel Vinson\, Abigail Rowe and Rebecca Dike.  That same year Gloucester resident Ebenezer Babson asked some of the afflicted Salem village girls to visit his mother who was complaining of “spectral visions” of Indians and French soldiers. Much of the documentary evidence has been lost. Come hear what Grace has dug up. \nGrace Schrafft\, a Gloucester native\, wrote her thesis\, “When Vengeance Wrote the Law\,” about the Cape Ann women who were accused of witchcraft in the 1690’s\, and why they were accused. She holds a master’s degree in public history education and is an acupuncturist by trade. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Lorenz Finison Reads
DESCRIPTION:Boston’s Cycling Craze\, 1880-1900 \nA Story of Race\, Sport\, and Society \nLorenz J. Finison \n  \nHow cyclists of all backgrounds made Boston a hub of nineteenth-century bicycling \n  \nFrom 1877 to 1896\, the popularity of bicycles increased exponentially\, and Boston was in on it from the start. The Boston Bicycle Club was the first in the nation\, and the city’s cyclists formed the nucleus of a new national organization\, the League of American Wheelmen. Massachusetts had the largest per capita membership in the league in the 1890s and the largest percentage of women members. Several prominent cycling magazines were published in Boston\, making cycling a topic of press coverage and a growing cultural influence as well as a form of recreation. \n  \nLorenz J. Finison explores the rise of Boston cycling through the lives of several participants\, including Kittie Knox\, a biracial twenty-year-old seamstress; Mary Sargent Hopkins\, publisher of The Wheelwoman; and Abbot Bassett\, a vocal cycling advocate for forty years. Finison reveals the challenges facing these riders in a time of segregation\, increased immigration\, and debates about the rights of women. \n  \n“Finison introduces us to a number of interesting characters who were in some way involved in the struggle for greater opportunity and acceptance. This is an important contribution to the literature on race relations and cycling history.”—David Herlihy\, author of Bicycle: The History \n  \n“Finison demonstrates that cycling was not immune to the popular prejudices of the day. Not only is this an informative history\, but a compelling morality tale that meditates on the important intersection of sport\, race\, and gender in the broader spectrum of American culture.”—Thomas Whalen\, author of Dynasty’s End: Bill Russell and the 1968–1969 World Champion Boston Celtics \n  \nLorenz J. Finison is a founding member of Cycling Through History and principal of the public health consulting firm SigmaWorks.
