SUMMARY:Paying Attention to Internal Conflicts: How to use Complicated and Contradictory Feelings in Creative Writing
DESCRIPTION:A Benefit Workshop led by poet Tom Daley via Zoom for the GWC. \n\n“If you avoid the conflict to keep the peace you start a war inside yourself.’ (Cheryl Richardson) \n\n\n\nFrom Hamlet’s soliloquy\, “To be or not to be\,” to Katniss Everdeen’s conflict between the reluctance to kill and the wish to be a warrior in The Hunger Games\, internal conflict has stoked the bonfires of creative expression. \n\n\n\nWhat are your own internal conflicts? How might complicated and conflicting feelings inform your own writing? In this two-hour workshop\, we will examine examples of internal conflict in literature. This examination will form the basis for exercises in which you will investigate your own internal conflicts or those of your subjects and use them to create short scenes or stanzas.\n\n\nFor more information contact Henry Gloucesterwriters@gmail.com\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:The Embodied Voice with Nadine Boughton
DESCRIPTION:The Embodied Voice \n  \nThe embodied voice is one rooted not only in larynx and throat but the Earth; it retains the animal\, the sounds of the world rising up through the body. As Charles Olson wrote: \nwhatever you have to say\, leave\nthe roots on\, let them\ndangle \nAnd the dirt \nJust to make clear\nwhere they come from \n  \nThese three sessions are an opportunity to drop down out of our heads\, fall in love with words and sound\, speak from our roots. Strength and tenderness in our spoken voice brings alive the written word. There will be plenty of time for writing. \n  \n$150. Fridays\, 10-12pm – January 17\, 24 and 31. Open to all – poets\, writers and beginners. Limited to eight\, minimum six. \n  \nThis class is full.  Registration is closed. \n  \n\n____________________________ \n  \nNadine Boughton\, M.A.\, is a writer/poet\, collage artist\, creativity coach in private practice\, and teacher. Her poetry and essays have been published in literary journals\, trade books and presented in a number of venues. Her roots are in the oral tradition; she studied writing and voice with David Whyte and others. Nadine’s visual art is represented by the Matthew Swift Gallery in Gloucester and is exhibited and collected internationally. She holds an M.A. in Expressive Therapy from Lesley University\, Cambridge\, MA. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:The Dogtown Writers Festival
DESCRIPTION:  \nDogtown Writers Festival \nSeptember 27 and 28 \nJoin us and other fellow writers in exploring and celebrating PLACE\, with Cape Ann as a microcosm of the global macrocosm. The festival will be looking at what shapes our progressive future without losing “grounding” in our cultural roots and the history we grow out of. We will develop our personal connection with the “geography of our being”—the place in which we live\, work\, and create\, whether that place is Cape Ann or beyond. It is what poet Vincent Ferrini referred to as the “Holy Local\,” a lens through which to look at the world. \nClick here for more details.

SUMMARY:Framing the Story: An Introduction to the Art of the Graphic Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Framing the Story: An Introduction to the Art of the Graphic Memoir\n \nBefore we can put a single word down on the page\, we must first behold the mental image\, however fleeting\, that informs our meaning-making process. This is what makes the graphic novel such an incredible lesson to us as writers. It teaches us how to frame images in such a way as to be almost cinematic in our approach to storytelling. Frame by frame\, we see firsthand the decisions that go into telling one’s life story and this awareness cannot but improve our own writing process – regardless of the genre. After thoroughly unpacking David Small’s graphic memoir\, Stitches\, participants will be invited to tell their own stories – at first in pictures (no drawing experience necessary; we welcome stick figures) and later in prose\, all while discussing the difficult art of balancing the verbal & visual aspects of the form.\n\nJuly 20-21  9am to 3pm\n\nCost: $250\nMinimum of 5 participants – Max 12\n\n \nRegistration is closed.\n \n\nJulie Batten teaches in the English department at Salem State University and is the founder of the Glass House Shelter Project\, a grassroots organization that brings college courses into homeless shelters. She recently did a TEDx talk at SSU about her work with marginalized folks and the power of the written word to give us a renewed sense of belonging in the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgWZjOB_5Yg \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest

SUMMARY:Naming the World with Julie Batten
DESCRIPTION:Naming the World – a weekend of Personal Essay based on Bret Anthony Johnston’s book.\nTo write well we must be able to “name the world” around us in such a way as to throw a new light on the ordinary\, to see the everyday through a different lens – one that measures the now on its own terms without preconception or expectation. On the first day of this two-day workshop\, we will use the prompts from Johnson’s book to explore all of the basic elements of crafting compelling personal essays including character and setting\, dialogue and narrative style\, etc. We will write (and write some more) and spend the second day workshopping and discussing the bounty of our work and of course\, revising! Come with your stories and personal observations and family yarns. Come with your muses and musings and courage enough to wrangle it all onto the page! You will leave on Sunday afternoon with at least one revised and completed essay. \nJuly 13-14  9am to 3pm\nCost: $250\nMinimum of 5 participants – Max 12\n\n \n\nJulie Batten teaches in the English department at Salem State University and is the founder of the Glass House Shelter Project\, a grassroots organization that brings college courses into homeless shelters. SUMMARY:Guided Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Guided Memoir: A small-group experience for new writers\n\nMake new friends and nurture your creativity as you write your life story\, two pages at a time!\n\nJoin a small group of 5-10 participants as we support and encourage each other through a powerful reading and writing program. Our focus is on writing and sharing as creative outlets for self-discovery\, so you will never be graded or critiqued.\n\nEach week we will explore our life story using a flexible theme such as:\n\n    • love & friendship\n    • family connections\n    • abundance & scarcity\n    • turning points\n    • values & spirituality\n    • homecomings & so much more!\n\nEach session meets for two hours. During the first hour we will jumpstart our thinking with poems\, excerpts from award-winning memoirs\, and fun exercises—all aligned with that week’s theme. We will also receive prompting questions proven to jog memories and open new windows for exploration. During the second hour we will share two pages of our own writing\, offered as works-in-progress\, and receive supportive feedback.\n\nThis group is geared toward brand new writers. The readings and exercises are particularly helpful for those encountering or seeking out a life transition\, but everyone can benefit.\n\nFacilitator: Claudia Filos is an educator and personal historian with experience in community building\, peer-supported learning\, and facilitated discussion. She has worked in both traditional and non-traditional educational settings including Harvard University\, Brandeis University\, and edX. She holds an MA in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies and is particularly interested in mythology\, hero narratives\, oral poetics\, and photography.\n7:00-9:00 Monday Evenings \nApril 1-June 3 \n$250 \nRegister here:\n\n \n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest
