DESCRIPTION:Four Thursdays\n7-9:00 pm EST\nNovember 19\, 26\,\nDecember 3\, 10\n$75.00\n7 person min. enrollment\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[the] birds dreamed hungry:\na poetry workshop on Larry Eigner\nand Black Mountain Poetry\n\nWorkshop with Jennifer Bartlett & George Hart\n\n\nThis workshop will focus on the work and life of Larry Eigner and his relationship with Gloucester poets\, Vincent Ferrini and Charles Olson. While he is most often associated with the Black Mountain College poets\, Eigner\, who had severe cerebral palsy\, has also been read as an important influence on disability poetics\, as well as eco-poetics and the language poets. His work is formally and syntactically marked by the breath-based patterns described in Charles Olson’s “Projective Verse\,” and his poems also reflect William Carlos Williams’ “no idea but in things.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJennifer Bartlett was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and educated at the University of New Mexico\, Vermont College\, and Brooklyn College. She is the author of Derivative of the Moving Image (UNM Press 2007)\, (a) lullaby without any music (Chax 2012)\, and Autobiography/Anti-Autobiography (Theenk 2014). Bartlett also co-edited\, with Sheila Black and Michael Northen\, Beauty is a Verb: The New Poetry of Disability. Bartlett has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts\, Fund for Poetry\, and the Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut. Bartlett has taught poetry and disability awareness at Willie Mae Rock Camp\, United Cerebral Palsy\, the MS Society\, and New York Public Schools. DESCRIPTION: \n\nOur second screenwriting workshop with film producer and writer  \nPeter Almond     \n\nStarts 7pm EST. Class starts on October 20th and runs  four consecutive Tuesdays.  \nWorkshop is limited to eight –  $150\n\n\n \nTo save your space email Eileen@Gloucesterwriters.org \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese 90-minute workshops will consider basic screenplay writing issues involving premise\, structure\, character and impact. Workshop participants can make themselves familiar with the basics of these issues in texts by Lajos Egri (The Art of Dramatic Writing) and Robert McKee (Story).        \n\n\nWorkshop participants will be expected to bring a screenplay-related project to work on during the four week session. The project can involve any of the following: A series of character sketches\, an outline\, a treatment\, a sequence of two or more consecutive scenes in a screenplay in progress.\n\nDuring the first session each workshop member will discuss their proposed project and agree to a goal for the project during the four week workshop period. Almond also discusses the place of the screenplay in the context of film production\, so that the screenplay is seen in relation to other film “departments” (costume\, production design\, cinematography\, etc.) whose craft and artistic work interprets the screenplay to guide its work in the total  production.\n\nFilm clips from produced films will be shown to illustrate key points in story and writing. DESCRIPTION:A Benefit Workshop led by poet Tom Daley via Zoom for the GWC. \n\n“If you avoid the conflict to keep the peace you start a war inside yourself.’ (Cheryl Richardson) \n\n\n\nFrom Hamlet’s soliloquy\, “To be or not to be\,” to Katniss Everdeen’s conflict between the reluctance to kill and the wish to be a warrior in The Hunger Games\, internal conflict has stoked the bonfires of creative expression. \n\n\n\nWhat are your own internal conflicts? How might complicated and conflicting feelings inform your own writing? In this two-hour workshop\, we will examine examples of internal conflict in literature. DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays July 21\, 28\, Aug 4 & August 11  7pm EST \nPeter Almond is a film producer and writer in both documentary and narrative genres. He is currently filmmaker/Writer-in-Residence at the GWC. He wants to give a ZOOM Screenwriting Workshop as a contribution!  All proceeds from the workshop will all go to the GWC. These sessions will each look at four elements of the screenplay and its relation to production and the finished film. Each session will be illustrated by film clips from familiar and unknown works\, and will also include Peter’s work in progress for a narrative drama about Frederick Douglass. DESCRIPTION:Framing the Story: An Introduction to the Art of the Graphic Memoir\n \nBefore we can put a single word down on the page\, we must first behold the mental image\, however fleeting\, that informs our meaning-making process. This is what makes the graphic novel such an incredible lesson to us as writers. It teaches us how to frame images in such a way as to be almost cinematic in our approach to storytelling. Frame by frame\, we see firsthand the decisions that go into telling one’s life story and this awareness cannot but improve our own writing process – regardless of the genre. After thoroughly unpacking David Small’s graphic memoir\, Stitches\, participants will be invited to tell their own stories – at first in pictures (no drawing experience necessary; we welcome stick figures) and later in prose\, all while discussing the difficult art of balancing the verbal & visual aspects of the form.\n\nJuly 20-21  9am to 3pm\n\nCost: $250\nMinimum of 5 participants – Max 12\n\n \nRegistration is closed.\n \n\nJulie Batten teaches in the English department at Salem State University and is the founder of the Glass House Shelter Project\, a grassroots organization that brings college courses into homeless shelters. DESCRIPTION:Naming the World – a weekend of Personal Essay based on Bret Anthony Johnston’s book.\nTo write well we must be able to “name the world” around us in such a way as to throw a new light on the ordinary\, to see the everyday through a different lens – one that measures the now on its own terms without preconception or expectation. On the first day of this two-day workshop\, we will use the prompts from Johnson’s book to explore all of the basic elements of crafting compelling personal essays including character and setting\, dialogue and narrative style\, etc. We will write (and write some more) and spend the second day workshopping and discussing the bounty of our work and of course\, revising! Come with your stories and personal observations and family yarns. Come with your muses and musings and courage enough to wrangle it all onto the page! DESCRIPTION: \n \nThe Business of Writing group is now forming and has scheduled its first meeting.\n \nMonday\, January 14th at 6:30pm at the GWC\n\nWorking writers in all genres often struggle with the business end of their process. DESCRIPTION:GUIDED AUTOBIOGRAPHY GROUP: The Journey of a LifetimeJoin members of our community for a journey of personal exploration\,writing\, and community building as we:• leave a legacy for family members • facilitate life transitions• enhance personal growth • contribute to history • enjoy thethrill of self-discoveryGuided autobiography is a fun and effective process for life reviewthat combines autobiographical writing with small group experiences.Each week we will use prompting questions to jumpstart and organize our memoriesaround a meaningful life theme. The weekly sessions also provide asafe space for sharing our work-in-progress\, and participants will beasked to share two pages that they wrote during the previous week.Guided autobiography is especially powerful for those entering orwanting to enter a new phase of life\, but everyone can benefit. \nThis group will meet for ten Mondays Starting September 17 and ending on November  19 from 7-9 p.m. at the Maud / Olson Library at 108 East Main Street.\nClass cost: $250\nMinimum enrollment: 5\nMaximum enrollment: 8 \nRegister here: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will be contacted in the weeks prior to the first meeting. \nClaudia Filos is an educator and personal historian with experience incommunity building\, peer-supported learning\, and facilitateddiscussion. She has work in both traditional and non-traditionaleducational settings including Harvard University and edX. DESCRIPTION:Pass The Word to Veterans and\nThe Families of Veterans\n\n\n \n\nVeterans Writing Workshop Resumes\nThursday March 29\n \n\nThe Cape Ann Veterans Writing Workshop resumes this spring on Thursday March 29 and continues on Thursdays through May 3 from 10:00 a.m. until noon. This is the fifth year and tenth season of the writing workshop. Please call Lucia Amero at the Veterans Office at 978-281-9740 to register for the workshop. \n\n\nClasses are held at the Cape Ann Veterans Center\, 12 Emerson Ave. Gloucester. The writing workshop is free. New and experienced writers will appreciate a comfortable environment for writing and listening to the writings of others. He addressed simple questions which are still being asked today. What is our relationship to ourselves\, to others and to the world of nature around us?
